Sustainable Hero

Stephenie Robertson – FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies

“Having a sustainable solution to keep the power on is really what helps us continue to deliver on promises to our clients.”

Stephenie Robertson is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.

And that passion – that desire to help others – is what brought Stephenie to her current role as vice president of operations at FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies (FDB) in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

At the leading global contract development and manufacturing organization, Stephenie is responsible for the company’s supply chain groups that produce high-quality and safe medications.

“Here, there’s oncology products, vaccines, therapeutics for children,” she said. “I can’t think of a more noble way to put the application of chemical engineering to work than something that’s going to help people live better lives.”

But manufacturing medications call for FDB’s operations to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week – leaving little to no room for unplanned downtime due to bad weather or other interruptions.

To help better ensure the reliability of FDB’s operations, Stephenie and her team worked with Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions on a customized resiliency solution aligned to meet FDB’s current resiliency needs – and flexible enough to provide power generation for future expansions.

The services are outsourced to Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions for the entirety of the contract, alleviating FDB from the burden of regular testing, operations and maintenance of the equipment. And as part of its managed services contract, Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions will conduct 24/7 remote monitoring services to better protect the equipment from any unplanned outages and better ensure optimal generator performance.

“Having a sustainable solution to keep the power on is really what helps us continue to deliver on promises to our clients,” Stephenie said. “I think most people join this industry because they want to do something to help others. I can’t think of any other way to use a chemical engineering education than the betterment of humankind.”
